It's Official: I Win at Life

I would just like to say Happy Birthday Week to me and, as Martin Freeman would say...
never you mind how old I am.
Nah, just kiddin.  I'm 30.  :)
30?   30??

Yes.  And I'm super excited about it, as you can tell.  I've been waiting for 30 my whole life, and I actually never thought I'd make it this far, so this week, this month, this whole flippin year in fact...
Senor Moriarty says FIESTA

As always, I would like to thank my parents, without whom this personal party would not be happening.  I would also like to thank my husband and my daughter, for reasons.  Now everybody eat cake!

The Bloggess

First she was awesome enough to sign a book she didn't write!!
And then she said she liked my dress!!!!
Yeah, that's me.  Lady in Red...

Okay, let me back up.

I went to see bestselling author Jenny Lawson, AKA The Bloggess, at the Gaithersburg Book Festival with my fabulous friends today.  I think she is amazing.  Her posts on mental illness are, as you may know, super meaningful to me (#silverribbons)
AND she's the funniest person on the internet.
Oh, and she's on my computer desktop background.

I am not even close to being a stalker.  I am a fan.

We dropped in this afternoon (Judah Friedlander was around, and we listened to Steve Coll, too, which was enlightening) and whoa, there she was!:

She read a chapter from her book (this little gem was called "The Psychopath on the Other Side of the Bathroom Door") and then she answered questions, and a thoroughly wonderful time was had by all.  Even the uniformed police officer near me was having a good time.

There was a looooooong line for the book signing.  I have no pictures of this process, nor do I have any photographic evidence that I talked to her.  I do, however, have a signed copy of Wil Wheaton's Just a Geek...  because I had no physical copy of the book for her to sign, but also because they're friends, you guys, geez!

Afterward, home.  And ice cream.  YAY.

EDIT:  And then I saw this!!:

"Now we are so happy, we do the Dance of Joy!!!!"  What a fantastic day, you guys.  XD

Off-Topic: Mental Illness Again

Just really quick, guys: best-selling author Jenny Lawson, the Bloggess, has another amazing post about mental illness...

go HERE for her video post...

then go HERE or HERE to print out free awareness bracelets.

Therapy saved my life.  SO if you find that you may need help:
go to therapy, talk to the people you love, avoid your triggers, take whatever legal drugs you need.  And as Jenny says, don't leave.

Off-Topic: Mental Illness

Hi guys.  So I don't normally talk about this, which puts me in the majority, as most people back away from this subject.  My silence comes not from discomfort, but an actual lack of language: I literally cannot find the words to talk generally about mental illness -- depression, bipolar disorder, et cetera ad infinitum -- because it affects me so specifically.  I'll not go into detail here, but I find that if I'm frank about the manifestation of my mood disorder or about my suicide attempts (yes, multiple, but I like to think I'm done now), it's much more alarming for the other participants in the conversation than it is for me.  They tend to shut down and nervously change topics; after all, it's lived in my brain for years, I can't possibly be shocked by it, but it's not something typically discussed in mixed company.  However...

However.  In the last three months or so, there have been some important blog posts written by one or two very brave people on this subject.  Their writings (and drawings) affected me deeply, in much the same way that F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Crack-Up or Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper had years before.  And the responses they've gotten to their posts serve to remind us just how many people are touched by this.  As more people open up, the shame spiral that surrounds this disease dissipates and transforms into communal healing.

Jenny Lawson's proposal of wearing silver awareness ribbons is just one way people can break the silence in their everyday lives; the #silverribbons Twitter campaign is happening now, but we can't let it die down.  If the battle with mental illness affects you or someone you love, please know you're not alone.

A Word about Today

A lot of people have some high emotions regarding today.  Our daughter has already noticed that we're sadder than usual and has set about to be extra sweet to make us smile.  My birthday will be arriving very soon, which only serves to further remind me that every moment is a gift.

Let there be peace on earth.

Thar's a Hurricane a-Comin

Most people in the western hemisphere are aware that Hurricane Irene is taking a jaunt up the east coast of the United States this weekend:

I live very near that turquoise cone of doom, and while I may be just west enough to be safe from the bulk of the damage, there's no doubt that something's in the air today...

The first few drops have started to fall.  We're hunkered down tight.  Stay safe, everybody.
